Selling your goods at a margin

What Is A Margin

Margin, when used in context to business, has three unique definitions. Although, the wording and interpretation of each is distinct, the core essence of each is similar

Three Definitions Of Margin

In terms of business commerce, a margin is defined as the difference between the sale price and purchase price of an article expressed in terms of percentage on selling price. Consider the following scenario: a retailer purchases an article for $6 and sells the same at $8, and then the profit margin, in this case, is 20% on the item in question.
The second definition of margin is in terms of financial accounting. Here, there are three distinguished calculation of income statement. For each, the parameters expressed are operating margin, gross margin and net profit margin, as the percentage of sales revenue.
The final definition is used when the term margin is used in investment. Here, margin denotes the monetary value a borrower loans from a bank or broker and invests the same for stock purchase. Through a margin buy, the investor has the option of purchasing a higher number of shares than which he/she can afford. In case of variation between buying and selling price, it results in leverage.

This second edition of Au is primarily focused on the first two understandings of the term margin as previously described

AU The Golden Business Touch

A pivotal concern for all businesses, regardless of their size and annual revenue, is margin. Margin is tracked by managers and owners throughout product manufacturers, retail shops, service providers and wholesalers. From a seller’s viewpoint, a margin is the price difference between purchase and sale. Markup is the absolute difference between the sellers selling price and cost price. These are expressed as the percentage on the cost of purchasing the seller bears.
